Changing Games (and diapers) Thursday, Jan 15 2009

Just when you cope with the rules, the game will change.  Today I am in Chicago, Illionois where my brother, sister-in-law and two nephews live. My job for the next two days is to take care of Jack (5 years old) and Sam (7 months). Keep in mind that at this point in my life, I have a husband (self-sufficient) two stepchildren  (2 days a week) and three dogs (require food & yard). (Are you wondering if my brother and sister-in-law are crazy for leaving kids alone with me?) This week, I will be caregiver and now, I have contracts with two new clients that are willing to pay me, but expect me to produce something and quick…  So, just as I was complaining about no job, peace, and too much quiet…my game changed.

Today’s game is juggling. Baby Sam is sick (evidently there is a bug going around) and Chicago is a balmy -4 degrees. (You would think my brother and sister-in-law would have mentioned this before my trip?) And, my two new clients both want marketing plans and new messaging for the FETC event next week. I will keep you posted on my progress, but if you have any magic potions for saving time, taking care of kids, and weathering a snow storm, let me know.

A Big BETT Monday, Jan 12 2009

Tomorrow, my husband, Ken, will attend his first BETT event in London. BETT is the largest education technology show in the world…or so they say.  It’s the first year I have not attended, so I can’t wait to get the full report.

2009 BETT Conference

A little background for you… Ken works for PolyVision, an education technology company that makes interactive whiteboards. My recent employer was Promethean, ALSO an education company that makes interactive whiteboards. (You probably figured out that I don’t work there anymore :-)

In coming posts, I will give the BETT lowdown and will hopefully have some pictures for you. Ken’s company is announcing a new three-in-one whiteboard that promises to make teachers’ lives easier. I might be biased, but this whiteboard is great for teachers because it combines dry erase markerboard, magnetic board, and interactive whiteboard with one system. And, virtually NO installation. Check it out on YouTube:

I will miss seeing my friends in London, especially visiting the pubs. Hopefully, you will all be in Orlando next week for FETC.

A new Monday… Monday, Jan 12 2009

It’s Monday. A new Monday. Not the kind that you experience when you have to go to work. Today, I woke up NOT having to go to work. You would think it would be exciting, but it is scary. Recently, I left the security of the corporate world and salary to go it alone.

I had a plan. I had clients who would pay me. The plan changed. The clients changed. Needless to say, here I am.

So, what’s a girl to do?

How about Nimble Nelson. The plan changed, so I changed. Be Nimble. That’s where the name comes from. Nimble Nelson. Learn to change. Change quickly. Take whatever comes and make the best of it. I guess I could have named this blog the Make Lemonade Out of Lemons blog, but figured that would be too long.

So, a little bit about me. I am a wife, stepmom, daughter, owner of three dogs (yes, three…), and a career girl. Well, I was a career girl. Soon, I will be again. I am a marketer, love the education technology segment, and think teachers are the greatest gift. (Well, good teachers…) So, that is why my background is in ed tech. I like working for companies that help teachers be good teachers.

So, take the journey with me and we’ll see what we can do to entertain, make money, help good teachers and of course, learn to be nimble. Enjoy.
